The All Day Trouser is the first design outcome from Welcome to Our Wardrobe, an ongoing research project exploring why we keep some clothes, wear them repeatedly and develop lasting relationships with them.

Rather than designing another trouser for a particular season or occasion, the project asks: Could one well-designed trouser work across more of our lives — and could that help us wear it more, keep it for longer and build memories in it?

Designed through wear

The trouser has evolved through making, wearing, observing and remaking. Its relaxed silhouette, adjustable waist and simplified construction have been developed around movement, comfort and versatility across different activities and environments.

The final pattern is now working and the current garment is being made. It will move next into real-world wear testing, followed by small refinements and versions in the intended colours and fabrics for photography.

One trouser. More of your day.

Our wardrobes are often divided into categories: work, leisure, travel, social occasions, formalwear and casualwear. The All Day Trouser questions whether those divisions always need to exist.

Its adjustable fit and relaxed proportions are intended to allow the same garment to move between activities rather than requiring a different trouser for each part of the day. Versatility becomes part of the durability proposition: more opportunities to wear a garment can mean more experiences in it, and more opportunities for attachment and memory to develop.

Durability through simplicity

Durability is not only about choosing a strong fabric. It can begin with the way a garment is designed.

During development, the construction of the All Day Trouser was progressively simplified. Pattern pieces were reduced, unnecessary construction was removed and potential points of future failure were reconsidered.

Rather than using complexity as a marker of quality, the trouser asks whether doing less can allow the things that remain to be done better.

Fewer components, seams and construction stages allow greater attention to stitch quality, seam execution and finishing.

Reduce complexity. Reduce potential failure points. Concentrate craftsmanship. Build for longer.

The fly that isn't a fly

The trouser retains the familiar visual language of a traditional fly front, but there is no functional fly zip.

During wear testing, releasing the adjustable waistband buckles proved easier and more comfortable than using a conventional zip fly. Removing the zip eliminates another mechanism that can wear out or fail while simplifying construction.

The retained fly appearance keeps something recognisable about the classic trouser while the method of dressing quietly recalls earlier garments in which clothing was opened and adjusted from the waist.

Built for longer

The All Day Trouser does not claim that a garment can simply be designed to last forever. Instead, the project investigates the different conditions that might encourage longer use.

Physical durability matters: fabric, construction, stitching, finishing and the removal of unnecessary failure points. But another form of durability matters too: Will someone still want to wear it?

Welcome to Our Wardrobe researches emotional durability and garment retention: the relationships that develop between people and the clothes they choose to keep. The All Day Trouser brings those questions into design practice.

Made to make memories in

Clothes change when we live in them. They crease, soften, fade, carry marks and travel with us.

Rather than treating these changes simply as deterioration, Welcome to Our Wardrobe is interested in wear as evidence of a relationship.

The All Day Trouser is designed to enter a wardrobe and acquire a life of its own. The finished garment is only the beginning.

An ongoing study

For now, Welcome to Our Wardrobe is deliberately concentrating on one trouser. There is no seasonal collection to replace it.

Instead, the All Day Trouser will continue to be worn, photographed, observed and documented. Its construction and materials can be refined as evidence accumulates.
