Let customers speak for us
Crafting a sustainable relationship with our products The future of fashion
We need to act more responsibly and sustainably if we are to continue enjoying fashion and accessories. We can do this by making our own quality products locally, and to a high standard. This was the challenge we set ourselves when designing factory-free luxury leather goods that are accessible to every skill level. At Mattocks we are passionate about people, the planet and education and this resulted in our unique designs and workshops. Below is a summary of how we work sustainably to bring you products that can help us all make a difference:
Innovative stitch free design
We use alternative construction techniques and take inspiration from creative pattern cutting techniques to make leather crafting more enjoyable, directional in terms of design and easier for you to get a high end product without years of training. We do this with interlocking and alternative seam designs that don't require intensive manufacture processes and can be made with simple tools included or in our studio in Nottinghamshire without relying on traditional fast fashion production methods. Lee Mattocks draws inspiration from a whole host of creative pattern cutting techniques and utilised the latest cutting technologies to realise these ideas or to develop into luxury craft kits. This experience comes from years working in the fashion industry and as a senior fashion lecturer. Prior to this Lee was an award winning textile artist constantly exploring creative sampling to create unique structures and textile artworks. Through bag workshops, Lee tests each new product and kits direct with customers so we are constantly evolving and tweaking our designs based on working directly with you all on our designs.
Gold rated tanneries & suppliers
We will only work with silver or gold rated tanneries in the UK or within the EU. This gold star rating is has currently been achieved by the tannery we work with in the Netherlands. This has been awarded by the auditing standards of The Leather Working Group (LWG) which covers many areas. The area we are especially concerned by is the disposal of harmful chemicals used in the production of leather, which if left unchecked will damage the surrounding eco-system if released into the water. This rating ensures that none are released into the environment and that the tannery is working at the highest environmental standard. It ensures a lot more than this as it covers the whole production process but this was a particular issue we are concerned about. The leather we use is recycled waste from the food industry and it would be incinerated if we didn't use it. We don't want to harm any other animals either in the preservation of this sustainable material so the chemicals are a key focus for us.
Built to last a lifetime
Alongside top quality leather we also responsibly source our hardware from Germany and Italy due to the quality of the metalwork. The quality of our leather combined with the hardware is very important because we can ensure your bag lasts a lifetime. Our dream was always that you could make yourself an amazing bag at home, at a fraction of the retail cost and 10 times better. This was always our mission and a very challenging one. We are really proud to make our products in these beautiful materials and so happy that anyone can make them at home due to our innovative design. If you make or personalise a product yourself you are more likely to keep it for longer and treasure it, so it's Its not just about the product itself but the emotional durability is a big factor when developing sustainable ideas.
